đ§ââď¸Recommended for: sleep troubles!
Sleep is well-known to be one of the primary factors contributing to our overall quality of life. We know we should get more rest, but it kinda feels like the odds are stacked against us. If we try to get to bed early, sometimes we just toss and turn. Or we wake up in the middle of the night exhausted but unable to stop staring at the ceiling.
In this gentle session, we’ll relax down the body, and use controlled breathing with mantra. This is a gentle form of cognitive behavioral therapy, and when used in conjunction with other techniques it is powerful and effective at helping you get some rest. Here are some tips, and you can find more on sleepfoundation.org:
1) Get informed! Make sure you understand the mechanics of whatâs happening â donât assume that what other people have told you is correct. Your sleep needs are as unique as a fingerprint, so donât take on anyone elseâs story about how sleep should work as this just causes more anxiety! Tune in and listen to your body, and when you feel called to look something up make sure youâre using a reputable source
2) Sleep preparation matters! What you put into your body in the couple of hours before you go to bed can make or break your ability to rest peacefully. Heavy foods, action-packed television, colorfully animated phone games, and over-stimulating social media can wreak havoc on the chemicals in your brain, and should all be avoided at least an hour before bedtime
3) Environment is a key component! Are you trying to sleep in a place designed for restful sleep? Or are you sleeping in a stuffy room with lights on, and the TV in the background? The subconscious mind is more willing to accept sleep if youâve trained your body that âthis is where we sleepâ. That means watching TV in bed (at any time) can trick your mind into thinking the bed is a place for entertainment, instead of rest. Aim for lights out at the same time every night, so your brain can begin to subconsciously prepare for sleep
4) And finally, exercise! If youâre not getting adequate movement, your body may not be fatigued enough to rest well. That doesnât mean you have to run a marathon or be a body builder, but getting small doses of movement can stimulate circulation and help keep all systems running smoothly, including your sleep cycle. If youâre a person who does not get enough movement (almost all of us!), start with 5 minutes a day of just walking around the house
