REIKI Hawayo Takata’s Story by Helen J Haberly – Preface
Hawayo Takata (1900-1980) holds a revered place in the history of Reiki,
a Japanese spiritual healing practice. Born in Hawaii, Takata’s life took
a transformative turn when she traveled to Japan in the 1930s seeking
relief from health issues. During her visit, she encountered Reiki, a holistic
system of energy healing developed by Mikao Usui. Impressed by the
profound impact of Reiki on her well-being, Takata became determined
to master the practice. She eventually received Reiki attunements and
training, becoming the first woman outside Japan to be recognized as
a Reiki master.
Takata played a pivotal role in introducing Reiki to the Western world.
After World War II, she returned to Hawaii and began sharing the healing
benefits of Reiki with others. Through her teachings, Takata initiated a
lineage of Reiki practitioners, ensuring the continuity and dissemination
of this ancient healing art. Her commitment to preserving the authenticity
of Reiki and her extensive efforts in training practitioners contributed
significantly to the widespread acceptance of Reiki as a holistic healing
modality. Today, Hawayo Takata is remembered as a key figure who helped
bridge the cultural gap and bring the transformative power of Reiki to a
global audience.
