Yin energy, associated with the feminine, is characterized by passivity, gentleness, and coolness. It embodies the acceptance of what is. Yin yoga targets the deep connective tissues in the body, offering stretches and stimulation to areas often overlooked in other yoga practices. This approach emphasizes long periods of stillness in each posture, encouraging relaxation and balance. Contrasting Yin energy is the Yang, or masculine energy, associated with activity and heat. The PMS period, characterized by strong symptoms, is marked by an excess of Yang energy. Women often experience this imbalance during the luteal phase–the five days before menstruation, subsiding up to four days after bleeding starts. To bring balance to this energy, Yin yoga can be a perfect practice. It works to counteract the effects of excess Yang energy in the body, promoting a more relaxed and peaceful state of being.
